I am an employment and education law attorney with over 30 years of experience advocating for the rights of employees, employers, teachers, and students. My strong sense of the labor market, business strategies, and employer relations is invaluable to my practice and my clients’ sensitive and complex legal matters.
In my employment law practice, I represent employees who experience discrimination, sexual harassment, hostile work environments, unlawful termination, workplace accommodations concerns, and Federal and State Medical Leave Act claims and retaliation, including whistleblowing under the Conscientious Employee Protection Act (CEPA).
I also represent employers in complex employment legal matters, present sexual harassment and anti-discrimination training, negotiate or enforce non-compete and non-solicitation provisions, and review employee handbooks.
I am a trained and qualified R.1:40 mediator for the Statewide Mediation Program for Civil, General Equity, and Probate Cases. I mediate private and court-appointed disputes. I regularly appear before the New Jersey Superior Court and Municipal Court in northern New Jersey.
I serve as a Trustee of the Bergen County Bar Association, Vice President of the Women’s Lawyers in Bergen County, and member of the Justice Morris Pashman Inn of Court. I served on the Paramus Board of Education and Bergen County Special Services Board of Education.
I firmly believe in listening carefully to a client’s needs and tenaciously fighting for their rights. I have earned a reputation as a tough, assertive, and tenacious advocate for my clients. In employment and discrimination cases, truth really is stranger than fiction. Clients come to us in egregious circumstances, and with hard work, we have repeatedly proven that we are most effective in representing individuals and small businesses.
I have developed a deep understanding and knowledge of employment law for decades. I am very attentive to each of my clients and their expectations of me, and I have developed and maintained valuable and professional relationships with the courts and adversaries.
“The way I think about it, being terminated from work is like a professional divorce, and, understandably, it can be difficult to overcome. My role is to help clients overcome and come out on the other side in a better way. At the end of the day, it’s all about advocating for people. I never lose sight of that.”
Since 1993, I have served as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, where I teach graduate and undergraduate courses on introduction to law, legal procedure, conflict resolution, negotiating, mediation and arbitration, civil responsibility, and legal research. I also regularly present legal seminars on employee rights for the Bergen County Bar Association.

Sheila represented me in two relatively complicated employment litigation matters, both of which resulted in favorable outcomes for me. Sheila impressed me as knowledgeable, accessible, diligent, and exceedingly professional. Her excellent “bedside manner” helped to minimize stress that I know is somewhat inevitable in litigation. I highly recommend Sheila to prospective clients wholeheartedly and without reservation.
I retained the services of Sheila O’Shea-Criscione to represent me against harassment and discrimination in my place of work. She came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Sheila directed me to the right course of action, clearly explaining each step and expected outcome. She was consistently available via phone, email, or text for emotional and professional support. Sheila is an excellent attorney and a warm, kind person. In the midst of a difficult situation, she paved the way to a successful outcome. I am a stronger and more confident person thanks to Sheila!
Sincerely,
Marie Coschigano
After numerous harassment and bullying encounter with my superiors, I was desperate for guidance and help as to what my legal rights were to try and put a stop to this behavior.
I turned to a number of attorneys. After talking on the phone, all declined to take my case. Sheila was the only one who took my call and then invited me to her office to explain my situation, from that first meeting until she resolved the case, she guided and supported me. She was never tired of my phone calls and text messages. There were times when I was on the verge of resigning, but she encouraged me and told me to hang in there and be patient. She was convinced of a positive outcome if we stuck with her “game plan” even when I became skeptical and began to doubt the direction we were going.
If you should ever need legal assistance, I highly recommend Sheila – a great lawyer and a wonderful person.
